From June 2 to 4, 2026, in Saint-Louis (Senegal), the COSTEA think tank organized, alongside <\/b><\/span>ISRA and LISODE, a regional participatory workshop dedicated to the agroecological re-engineering of collective irrigation systems.<\/b><\/p>\n

Titled “Rethinking collective irrigation systems for <\/b><\/span>agroecology,” this workshop brought together representatives from Irrigation Development and Management Companies (SAGIs), researchers, <\/b><\/span>project <\/b><\/span>owners, producers, and experts from several countries in <\/b><\/span>West <\/b><\/span>Africa and the <\/b><\/span>Maghreb.<\/b><\/p>\n

Notably, participants included stakeholders from Senegal, Chad, and Mauritania, members of the West African SAGI Network (ROA-SAGI), as <\/b><\/span>well as a representative from REMIG (Moroccan Interprofessional <\/b><\/span>Irrigation Network).<\/b><\/p>\n

Collective reflection rooted in field realities<\/b><\/h1>\n

This workshop is<\/span> a continuation of the actions undertaken by COSTEA in Senegal regarding the challenges of<\/span> irrigated agroecology and the transition of agricultural territories.<\/p>\n

It specifically extends:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • the collective internship organized in February 2026 in the Senegal River Delta with about fifty Senegalese and international students<\/li>\n
  • the launch of the COSTEA study on the agroecological re-engineering of irrigation systems in Senegal and Cambodia, which will last 18 months<\/li>\n
  • the national dynamics led by Senegalese partners, notably <\/span>ISRA-BAME, SAED, and the networks involved in the Senegalese agroecological transition strategy.<\/li>\n
  • A similar participatory workshop in Cambodia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The objective<\/span> is to identify concrete ways to adapt hydraulic infrastructure and management methods to contemporary challenges: agricultural diversification, sustainable water management, climate resilience, and the inclusion of<\/span> local stakeholders.<\/p>\n

    A participatory format based on <\/b><\/span>collective intelligence<\/b><\/h1>\n

    The <\/span>workshop took place in three stages:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • an opening and strategic framing <\/span>day<\/li>\n
    • a day of field visits to the irrigated areas of the delta<\/li>\n
    • a day of <\/span>participatory workshop based on the <\/span>use of <\/span>a serious game.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      This pedagogical tool allowed participants to simulate concrete situations related to <\/span>water management, the <\/span>organization of irrigated perimeters, and trade-offs between agricultural uses, infrastructure, and environmental constraints.<\/p>\n

      The <\/span>approach developed by COSTEA does not only aim to disseminate good agricultural practices, but to examine the systemic dimensions of the agroecological transition: <\/span>water governance, collective organization, design of developments, the role of producers, and the coordination between technical actors and territories.<\/p>\n

      Through this regional workshop, COSTEA pursues its objective: to produce operational knowledge and support the transformation of <\/span>irrigated agriculture through collective, territorial, and action-oriented approaches, notably through its <\/span>training \/ capacity building component.<\/p>\n

      Use of a serious game to simulate concrete situations related to agroecological challenges \u00a9COSTEA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

      COSTEA: an international network dedicated to <\/b><\/span>water for <\/b><\/span>food<\/b><\/h1>\n

      Created in 2013 with the support of the <\/span>French Development Agency (AFD), COSTEA is a think tank dedicated to <\/span>water for <\/span>food in the face of climate change challenges.<\/p>\n

      It brings together an international community of nearly 800 members\u2014experts, scientists, agricultural <\/span>water managers, public officials, and technical partners\u2014mobilized around four priority themes:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • the agroecological re-engineering of irrigation systems<\/li>\n
      • the reuse of wastewater for <\/span>agriculture<\/li>\n
      • the <\/span>mitigation of the <\/span>climatic impact of <\/span>irrigated agriculture<\/li>\n
      • territorial and participatory <\/span>water governance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
