Diverse territories, shared lessons: each field experience enriches the entire network’s reflection.
COSTEA’s actions are primarily deployed in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Mediterranean region, and Southeast Asia. They involve ministries, research organizations, universities, agricultural water managers, professional organizations, producers, and numerous technical and financial partners.
Title
This presence in various geographical contexts allows for cross-referencing experiences, fostering exchanges between countries, and producing transferable knowledge, while taking local specificities into account. The lessons learned from one territory thus feed into a collective reflection that benefits the entire network.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, COSTEA supports the transformations of irrigated agriculture in close collaboration with national institutions, hydro-agricultural development companies, research organizations, and professional organizations.
the agroecological re-engineering of large collective irrigated perimeters
water governance and management methods for hydraulic infrastructures
capacity building for project owners and irrigation managers
the production of technical and methodological references to support transitions.
gender issues in agricultural transitions
In Sub-Saharan Africa, COSTEA supports the transformations of irrigated agriculture in close collaboration with national institutions, hydro-agricultural development companies, research organizations, and professional organizations.
Through the West African Network of SAGI (ROA-SAGI), the lessons learned are progressively shared with all irrigation managers in the region.

In Mediterranean countries, COSTEA’s work addresses the growing challenges of water scarcity and the adaptation of agricultural systems to climate change.
the reuse of treated wastewater (REUSE)
unconventional water resources
agricultural water governance
the assessment of health and environmental risks
participatory approaches to support public policies.
Tunisia is a reference territory for REUSE issues. For several years, COSTEA has conducted work there combining national diagnostics, territorial studies, multi-stakeholder workshops, scientific productions, training, and the development of innovative tools such as the multi-barrier approach and the AMBRE serious game.
This work currently informs an international discussion on the conditions for sustainable operationalization of REUSE in agricultural territories.

In Cambodia, COSTEA develops an approach strongly articulated between scientific research, field experimentation, and methodological innovation.
the agroecological re-engineering of irrigated systems
the socio-hydrological dynamics of the Mekong floodplains
water management in small rice perimeters
gender issues in agricultural transitions
capacity building for national stakeholders.
Research relies on several academic and institutional partnerships, notably with the Royal University of Agriculture, the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, the Irrigation Service Center, and the ECOLAND research center.
COSTEA also supports doctoral research dedicated to the trajectories of agroecological transition in rice farming systems, mobilizing innovative participatory approaches such as the Rice Up serious game, developed with farmers to collectively explore the conditions for more sustainable agriculture.
