Our Focus Areas

Through its international community of experts, researchers, agricultural water managers, and public decision-makers, COSTEA organizes think tanks, field expertise, cross-cutting experience feedback, and training on four main themes:

Agroecological Re-engineering and Management of Collective Irrigated Systems

Irrigated agriculture must move beyond the models inherited from the Green Revolution. With a systemic approach, COSTEA reinvents hydraulic infrastructures, their management methods, and collective organizations to support the agroecological transition.

Remote sensing, satellite data, decision support: COSTEA evaluates the potential of new technologies and supports their deployment among managers, farmers, and decision-makers.

Wastewater Reuse for Agriculture

In the face of resource scarcity, non-conventional water sources are a major lever for securing access to water in agriculture.

COSTEA contributes to defining the conditions for sustainable use of these resources by integrating health, technical, economic, regulatory, environmental, and social dimensions. Its objective is to promote the operationalization of REUSE adapted to local realities.

Mitigation of Irrigated Agriculture's Impact on Climate Change

Irrigated agriculture contributes to food security but also to greenhouse gas emissions.

COSTEA seeks to better characterize this contribution, develop assessment methods, and identify levers to reduce the climate footprint of irrigated systems, while preserving their economic and food performance.

Participatory and Inclusive Territorial Water Governance

Agricultural water cannot be managed independently of the territories in which it is situated.

COSTEA promotes governance models that involve various stakeholders, consider the diversity of uses, and foster collective, equitable, and sustainable decisions for the benefit of the territories.
